Final pick: the absolute best hair dyes to lighten/darken dyed brown hair

Whether your dyed brown hair is too light, too dark, too brassy, or you have outgrow, there is always a reason to freshen up your brown hair dye.

But dying brown hair can be a mine field. You can't go too light or too dark. And the red undertone is always lurking...

I just had my brown hair overtoned at the salon and I am devestated. I decided to use all my knowledge about box dying again to pick the ultimate shade to go lighter again.

Mind you, I have an arsenal of anti brass products at my disposal, so I can afford to go a little brassy right after dyeing.

So, I use a different one of the shades below depending on my needs. I sorted them from light to darkest so you can see what each color does and how ashy they all look. You'll see that not all shades explicitally mention the use on very dark brown hair, some even mention it, even very light shades like L'Oreal Excellence 8.1 Light Ash Blonde, which is why I buy these shades.

Here are my favourite picks:

Left to right:

- L'Oreal Excellence Cream 8.1 Light Ash Blonde

- Garnier Belle Color 11 Light Ash Blonde

- Garnier Belle Color 4 Ash Blonde

- Poly Palette 500 Dark Blonde

- L'Oreal Excellence Cream 6 Dark Blonde

- Poly Palette Noble Browns 536 Light Ash Brown

I have used all of these shades at least once and I'll tell you the pros and cons of each shade and which ones I use for which result. As you can see I have them all in stock here and I am currently choosing one to put over my overtoned hair.

Here is a picture of the back:

Here are the three lightest shades' color chart

What I use each shade for

L'Oreal Excellence Cream 8.1 Light Ash Blonde

I use this one when my hair is super dark and brassy. It does lift very deep brown dyed hair quite a few shades, but at the cost of looking brassy. However, that also depends on the amount of red pigment in your previous dye and a good toner like the L'Oreal Color Corrector Brunettes and the Fanola No Orange Shampoo can help. It is definitely great for lightening.

Pros:

- hair feels soft

- comes with shampoo

- hair is shiney

- hair is much lighter

- explicitly allowed on dark brown hair (see chart)

Cons:

- hair is painful when wet

- becomes brassy

- maybe a bit too light for a brunette

Garnier Belle Color 11 Light Ash Blonde

I use this one as well to lighten dyed brown hair that is too dark and brassy. I really like this one. Pros:

- very good ashy color

- not too light

- soft hair

- pulls everything together

Cons:

- not explicitly allowed on very deep brown hair, more of a light brown (see chart)

- a bit dry

After looking up the before and after pics I made for all my seperate I once made for these shades, I decided I will go with this shade to lighten my overtoned hair

Garnier Belle Color 4 Ash Blonde

This is my favourite for when I like my brown depth, just don't like the brassiness. This shade is dark enough to maintain my light brown hair, but is not light enough to do some mentionable lightening. I just love how ashy it makes my hair and that makes it the perfect dye for refreshing my hair.

Pros:

- explicitly allowed on dark brown hair (see chart)

- gorgeous lighter ash brown hair

- reliable, even for touching up medium brown hair

Cons:

- no spectacular lighter result on very dark hair in reality

Poly Palette 500 Dark Blonde

I use this one when I want to go a tiny bit lighter but want a nice big ASH (thicc ASHH) and reaaallly good coverage. Like, this stuff lightens and "ashes" any outgrow and dyed parts, whether you have streaks or overlapping or what not. See my older posts for result. But the dye fades fast, and is extremely dry, the type of dry that makes ya cry when you comb through wet hair. So I avoid this one.

Pros:

- extremely ashy even though it does not mention it

- lightening

- green undertones for beigey effect

- almost odorless

Cons:

- doesn't say it's ashy

- very drying

L'Oreal Excellence Cream 6 Dark Blonde

I use this one when my hair is basically alright. Lately I noticed though that it turns brassy mega quick, as in, it just fades quickly, even if I touch up after a couple of weeks. I need a lot of blue shampoo with this shade and I don't like it. I miss the word "ashy" in the name. I am not sure if I will keep this one in the list. To sustain a good medium light brown I may as well use my other favourite, the Garnier Belle Color 4, which at least is ashy!

Pros:

- natural result

- good for sustaining a light brown shade

Cons:

- not explicitly ashy

- not very ashy, needs looots of purple shampooing

Poly Palette 536 Light Ash Brown

I use this shade after summer when I am extremely light, brassy and glassy. It gives my hair a gorgeous ashy light brown shade. Do not use on already good medium brown hair! It turns out dark!

Pros:

- good for darkening extremely lightened, post-summer brassy glassy hair

- almost odorless

- very ashy/beige

Cons:

- pretty dark, looks dark brown if put on medium or light brown hair!

So, I decided to go for the Garnier Belle Color 11 Light Ash Blonde shade this time. I can really recommend the Garnier shades for lightening. The L'Oreal 8.1 is alright, but tends to leave hair a bit brassy. Go to my home page and click in the left column on labels and hair to see all my hair dye before and after pictures. The only color I have no pictures of is in fact my favorite, the Garnier Belle Color 4. will take some new pictures if I ever use that shade again. I have all the shades laying around here waiting for a doomsday, so maybe I'll need the Garnier Belle Color 4 one tonight if that shade 11 failed! But I am sure it won't, especially not with my trusted blue shampoos and creams.
